This project involved the conversion of a listed eighteenth century cylindrical dovecote, complete with potence (revolving ladder) into a guest annex.

The council’s conservation officer insisted that the ladder and central post were kept which presented a serious challenge as the building was only 4m in diameter. The first floor was made up from three radial beams and inched into place around the central post. A purpose made steel staircase follows the curve of the dovecote’s drum freeing up just enough space on the ground floor for the bathroom. In key areas the walls were finished with timber boarding and finally a wedge shaped double bed was fitted. The client’s design for the lighting, with tiny fittings in the old nesting boxes, provides an extraordinary finishing touch to the space.
